Re: World Health Organization declares coronavirus outbreak a 'pandemic'

We are around 250 cases or so lately, and going down. Should be opening up further soon, but you are right, the new variants are of concern.

I read an article the other day that somewhere in a Florida county building, there was a small outbreak in a municipal building, where 3 were hospitalized and two others died. I don't know how long after the onset of symptoms those two died, but I'm pretty sure it was indicated somewhere in that article that the two that died were not vaccinated.

Of note:
The Manatee County Board of County Commissioners had voted 6-1 in May to rescind COVID-19 protocols, including the wearing of face masks, as the Herald noted.

Since I posted earlier today,
White House chief medical advisor Dr. Anthony Fauci said Wednesday the delta variant now accounts for roughly 20% of newly diagnosed cases in the U.S. and will become the dominant Covid strain in the nation in a matter of weeks.

“It just exploded in the U.K. It went from a minor variant to now more than 90% of the isolates in the U.K.,” Fauci said on NBC’s “TODAY” show. Fauci said the variant has a doubling time of about two weeks and currently accounts for 20% of the isolates in the U.S., which are newly diagnosed infections. “So you would expect, just the doubling time, you know, in several weeks to a month or so it’s going to be quite dominant, that’s the sobering news.”

The variant, which first emerged in India, has quickly swept across the globe. World Health Organization officials said Monday that delta has been found in at least 92 countries. Dr. Mike Ryan, head of WHO’s emergencies programs, said the variant is the fastest and fittest coronavirus strain yet, and it will “pick off” the most vulnerable people, especially in places with low Covid-19 vaccination rates...

Hope there will be mRNA booster shots offered later this year. With a winter vaca still planned for Florida this coming winter, they still seems to have a high number of cases compared to where we are. I know we have about 5 million less in population, but with our cases at around 300 per day, the cases per population is way less here.

It is sad that there are so many who refuse to get the the vaccination. They are mostly the ones who are still spreading this virus around.

The new variants may not convince them either. :(

Add: I'm coming across articles that advise to expect more variants as we go forward because the various current state of viruses are expected to further simmer and mutate. That said, I don't know if the rich countries around the world have a deal or not, where, lets say, for every 10 doses they purchace, at least one dose goes towards immunizing the rest of the world in areas that do not have funds to purchase, or do not have access to the vaccine. That, and getting the anti-vaxxers on board. Are there any unpopulated islands they can decide to relocate to? Sorry if I've offended anyone.

Effective July 1 we are going into our recovery plan. Masks not legally required but businesses can require masks to protect their staff if they choose.

Going to wait and see how this goes. I might still be a hermit....

I am aware the WHO is recommending vaccinated people wear masks. While that may be necessary in Europe, here in the States, I don't think we need to do that after getting vaccinated.

Its not always about whether you have to wear a mask or not, sometimes (for me anyways) it's about judging the situation and figure out if it might be a good idea to wear a mask even if you don't have to. But i can understand that some people are tired of wearing masks, but COVID-19 is not over yet even thou the numbers are starting to look better. So we should probably still be careful.

We've got two or three more weeks until they open things up here (phase 3). I think the masks come off at that point. Although, I may continue to wear my mask while in close proximity to others for a while - drug store, food shopping. But I do want to get to the mall sometime soon, so for the mall... well, I'll have one on hand for inside any busy stores.

I really hope it works this time.
