Ride Sharing

Post by Accrete »

We do not have ride share here yet.

Taxi companies not happy.

I spoke to a cab driver and he said their vehicle insurance is thousands of dollars a month compared to what ride share people will have to pay.

Just saw this also:
...When services do eventually start operating, ride-hailing drivers will use their personal vehicles, which means that few, if any, rides will be able to accommodate people who are unable to transfer to a vehicle seat or use mobility aids that can’t be easily stowed in a trunk or back seat.

Taxi companies are required to have wheelchair-accessible taxis in their fleet. According to statistics from the Passenger Transportation Board, about 14 per cent of taxis in the province are accessible, and about 19 per cent in Metro Vancouver, though it can still be difficult for people with disabilities to get an accessible cab.

There is no such requirement for ride-hailing companies...
B.C. ride-hailing services won't be accessible to all

This does not seem to be a fair playing field.

The only good thing I have heard about this is that one has to upgrade their drivers license if they want to provide ride sharing.

Also, there is a website where you can find someone driving to a location where you wish to go. Wonder who is regulating those people? Would you miss work due to a transit strike or chance this person is a safe driver and has enough insurance to cover you if in an accident?

How is ride sharing working out in your location?

I drive 98% of the time where I am located, but if I were closer to the city, I'd use probably use Uber or Lyft a lot.

After taking a bus to the downtown city center (around $10) I have taken an Uber twice, and didn't have any issue. I knew the price, it was: get in, travel, get out. My kids use Uber a lot more than I do, and they Uber way more than taking cabs. I get where taxies are coming from - the cab licences and insurance is expensive, but in all honesty, I love the Uber experience. I can open an app, enter my ride details, follow the car on the phone app as they are travelling to your home/pickup spot, and with that app, you know when to put on your coat and shoes as it's approaching. I realize there are, and have been issues with Uber drivers, but overall, I'd say its a great idea. Get the cabs to be as price-competitive, get on board with an app to call cars (maybe there is one already??) and maybe I'd be open to using a cab the same way I'd use Uber.

The cab companies here are on the app band wagon although I have used the old fashioned phone to call for one...

Uber and Lyft got approved here yesterday but they have limited availability. Mayor of one of the cities is not onboard though. He's fighting tooth and nail to stop them but not oking business licenses for them. We will see what the coming weeks and months bring. That Mayor is not in the good books for a few things so he may be on his way out...
