Re: Passing the Time at Home
I guess I feel fortunate as the boys are still at home, because the rental and home-buying climate is very, very expensive right now. While they're still around, we still go into decorating mode for Xmas.

Re: Passing the Time at Home
Installing the xmas porch railing lights and garland today. A little cool, but at least the sun is out.
My decision to get a new roof installed earlier this year was a good one. With 90 kph wind gusts yesterday, it's a guessing game as to which neighbours roofing shingles are in my yard.

Been there and played that game.We had to bite the bullet 2-3 years ago. Lucked out and insurance paid most of it and I'm real glad they did. They charge a lot now to do these steep suckers.

Re: Passing the Time at Home
The good thing where I am, is that the storms we get are not as severe as the ones further south. The good side of that, is that damage is usually minimal. Hence, going thru insurance for minimal damage usually means paying a price less than the deductible, thereby negating going thru insurance in the first place.
So, without a new roof, I was resigned to paying to get minor fixes done maybe twice per year. And, that adds up.
If the guys can get here quickly - not a problem. However, they're usually so busy with all sorts of repairs on multiple houses, it could be several days to a week to get someone here to replace the missing tiles. Then, I pray that it doesn't rain.

Re: Passing the Time at Home
The weather around here this week is just bad enough to prevent working outside, cool, cold nights and off and on rain showers do not work for poring concrete. And the nasty weather is soon to follow. I came up about 10 days short of finishing the deck around the pond.
Deck / concrete you say. Poured ribbons of concrete because you can't buy ground contact treated lumber that is going to last; at least you can't in the states. The old CCA stuff I used in 95 lasted close to 20 years. Replaced a few bad boards and they rotted in in 5. I think I only need it to last 15 or so and then it will be someone else's problem.

Colbyt, that sounds too much "like work". My back and sore joints preclude me from heavy laborious work. Thats my story and I'm sticking to it!

Re: Passing the Time at Home
I bought a hand-held cement mixer, a high torque, moderate rpm mud mixer: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B09YVNFJ42?ps ... ct_details that will mix a 60 lb bag in a 5 gallon bucket. Far easier on the back, neck and shoulders that the mortar pan and hoe method.
I made the mistake of buying a cheaper one from flea bay first and it died about half way through the project.
There is a process to the mixing and you have to use more water than the bag calls for but everyone I ever saw mix the stuff does that anyway.

If you want an engine that don't wear out, you should try to go for a brush-less engine.

That is good advice but so far as I know they don't make one of these. They may but not at a price point I'm willing to pay.J. H. Rasmussen wrote: ↑Tue Dec 06, 2022 7:48 pm If you want an engine that don't wear out, you should try to go for a brush-less engine.
At almost 72 I don't suspect I will be mixing that many more bags.
Are you ready for the holidays?

Re: Passing the Time at Home
I'm as ready as i can be. I'm going to stay home for xmas this year to, and for for once looking forward to some warmer weather. Heating and electric bills are getting more expensive over here.
