Re: Passing the Time at Home
Yes, it's more finely cut/mulched straw. Bales of straw can be used also, but the straw mulch is a better insulator. We use this for some of the more delicate garden plants, like our hydrangeas. They are really nice "showy" plants in the summer, but if they've suffered thru a nasty, cold winter, without proper insulation at the base, they will appear stunted in terms of growth, and rarely would they flower.

Did you manage to get it?
I would probably buy it pre-made also. Chopping it would be a bear.
It feels like Fall outside. Maybe we will get a nice Indian Summer.

Yes - it was on sale too! $7 off per bag - so I bought 4 of them, and we've got all we need. It is probably cheaper to buy the straw bales, but I couldn't see myself chopping it up either. We also picked up a nice fall mum planter with tall grass decoration, to replace our summer planter out front.
It's cool here as well - until Monday. This cool weather is what one would expect in mid October. It warms up on Monday thru all of next week though. Looking forward to that. However, with the cooler weather on the horizon, I've got to get my a$$ in gear and plan some time to get the shed and garage cleaned out. I've put those chores off because of how hot it was here this summer. Well, now it's cool, and I can't put it off any longer.
Today's sky is a deep blue. Looks like all the fire smoke has moved on.

Yep. The annual Fall chores are here to haunt us all.
Speaking of haunting, our mayor is not inclined to cancel Halloween trick or treat. That sounds like a major screw up to me, potentiality transferring scads of germ from one place another.

Re: Passing the Time at Home
I agree wholeheartedly. I can't say about our local rules on Halloween this year. But, while cancelling Halloween isn't a great thing for the kids, I treasure their health, the health of their parents, grandparents, aunts uncles, and so on. Parents can give them candy any time.
These are extraordinary times, which everyone should know about and agree that extraordinary measures are necessary. And, when I read about these "house parties", and other large gatherings both inside and outside (albeit large inside gatherings are just "advanced" stupid), I can only shake my head.
All we have to do, is just "take one for the team" for another 6-8 months, stay inside, distance from unfamiliar people and groups, not gather in large groups, wash our hands etc, and then, hopefully, a truly safe and effective vaccine will be ready for the general public.

<sarcasm>But that is so much effort with no instant gratification. We need to go to parties so we can post them on social media.</sarcasm>
Making a big pot of beef soup / stew for tomorrow.
Cooling the rice for fried rice and egg rolls for dinner tonight. Been a good bit since we had that meal.

Re: Passing the Time at Home
Well the rain came (finally) and cleared out the smoke we have had for the last 10 days.
Got some paperwork stuff done.
Off shopping tomorrow and plan on getting some mums and/or winter pansies.

Got winter pansies for front planters. Almost got mums for planter boxes on railings but resisted.
