LMD wrote: Fri Jun 12, 2020 9:50 pm It's been almost 13 years since purchasing the last laundry machines, but in that time (a little while back) i was told the front loaders would last about 5 years. And if you got 7 or 8 years - bonus! I dont know if things have changed or not, but the warranty on most units is generally about a year. LG gives 3 years on some parts and 10 yrs on the drive line.

What I get from this, is that most manufacturers don't trust their workmanship beyond 12 months.

Sad.
Warranties on the whole have declined over the years. Very few things have more than a year now. That is why I was pleasantly surprised when my control board on the kitchenAid DW was still under warranty (5 years).

I suspect the bean counters are part of the problem as corporations must retain some earnings to fund warranty repairs and it is a liability on the books.

I can't quote you any sources but my take is that the front loaders are more prone to repair, cost more, don't last as long, are prone to develop foul smells, only wash smaller loads, don't get the clothes as clean and no one I know that has one ever wants another one. Exception being LOL's who find the height and ease of unloading more to their liking.

We moved here in 1995 and brought a 2-3 year old gas dryer and old washer with us. 2-3 years after that we bought a new washer and except for replacing a whiny fill valve last year both are still going strong. I will admit that since about 1998 we are just 2 people and the load on the machines is reduced over your usage.

I read on other forums that appliance life as a whole is greatly reduced over what it was 20 years ago and I tend to believe that data.

<rant>Models, machines and parts go obsolete far sooner than they formerly did. We are meant to consume, repairs are scoffed at and we should throw away and buy new. </rant>

Agreed on all your points above. Most things these days that are electrical and gas-powered, are mostly "throw-away". I bought a gas lawn trimmer when I moved in about 12 years ago. It was a home-owner model, not a commercial model. I I used to have commercial mowers and trimmers in the past, but had to sell them when I closed the business and started working in front of a PC.

Well, the home-owner unit stopped running well after a couple of years. I tried a tune-up myself, carb cleaning junk etc, but it really needed to come apart, and be cleaned and tuned properly by a mechanic. That, was going to cost more than buying a new battery powered unit. So, since I had moved to a smaller property by then, I did the eco thing and bought a battery powered unit. That battery powered unit lasted about 8 years (surprisingly), but with each year, the batter held less and less charge, until the point I replaced it last year.

Back to laundry - I'm thinking top-loader washer pair. They guy we buy our appliances from over the last 3 or 4 years (a friend of my son) has done good by us, for price and being responsive to our needs, giving lots of advice and supportive with any warranty repair visits.

I've looked at all the brands, and LG has gotten good ratings from the web reviews, but I don't know if I trust them or not. Our appliance guy says their hard to service, and they will need service, so he says. I think it's partly because he doesn't sell LG products. But then the service issue could be the main reason for that. If they need lots of warranty work our out of warranty work, it doesn't fit into the repair division's plan. I think he likes to sell the more reputable units so everyone is happy. I don't know. As far as online reviews, anyone can be paid to push just about anything these days.

Whirlpool is the brand I like, but the units the appliance guy sells doesn't include the unit that supports our wish-list, and will fit and operate in the limited laundry room space I have. I could make the laundry room much bigger, but I'd have to take down walls, re-rout plumbing and electrical, fix flooring, ceilings, etc - probably $10-15k minimum when done (not practical). :(

If it helps you with your choices, mine were, are and probably will be Whirpool. If your guy is a dealer and you are willing to wait, he should be able to order you anything you want.
Here Lowes has maybe 200 models on the website and only 5-6 in store. The same is true of HomeDepot.

He does sell many major brands, but because of his issue with servicing LG, unless he comes up with a solution with what he sells ( last i heard he was looking into Whirlpool and Maytag - who i think are both sold under the same company) we'll probly be going with LG, but from another appliance dealer.

In the apartment they got new front load machines in the common laundry. Sign posted by the machine provider says to leave the door open on the washers so they dry properly.

We have top load washer, front load dryer. The niche where they are is not deep enough. When they die we want to get apartment size stackable. We stayed in a hotel that had a set of stackable but their type wasn't that easy to use. Friends have a set of stackable regular looking washer and dryer. We'll have to see if where they got them still has them when we need to replace ours.

I've seen some that are I thought were really nice and some I did not like so seeing and touching before you buy is the correct course. We could do with a smaller option as I often wind up setting the water level for less than full.

It is beautiful outside today, reasonable temps, low humidity and a blue sky.

Beautiful here too, albeit a touch on the cool side. Warming up starting tomorrow, but at least 4-5 days of sun in the forecast. Time to think about a watering plan for the garden and grass!

Woke up to thunder and now rain. A cold front moved in this morning. The high today is 70F. I guess this is the modern version of Blackberry winter.

Today I get to trim all the boxwoods on the property. Not a lot, but enough to say it was "work". ;) I also get to trim some parts of the front lawn garden bed.

If there's time, I may go to the course for some practice range this afternoon to do some long hitting, chipping and putting. I've found that I'm as good as I'm going to get at the game, without any tangible practice time - especially chipping around the green. I know I can probably lower my score at least 6-8 strokes if I can practice chipping to get better around the green. However, all that fun practice time I imagine taking place later on, will all depend on what else has been cooked up for me to look at today. :)
