If you are interested in the history of the copyright symbol Jonathan Bailey of Plagiarism Today has put together an article explaining the history of this internationally recognized symbol:
...the copyright symbol is everywhere. and we see it hundreds of times a day, usually without thinking about it.

As archaic as it is, copyrights still begin with the originator. Symbol declaration or not, the creator is the original rights holder.

I believe it is like that in many countries including here in Denmark, but of course i am no lawyer.
